Jim Harbaugh has an interesting decision to make before this Sunday. He can keep playing the hot hand in Colin Kaepernick who is coming off a great performance against a solid Bears defense, or he can go with Alex Smith who has been a model of consistency over the past season and a half. Smith suffered a concussion during a week 10 campaign against the Rams. In his absence, Kaepernick put together a 2 td performance with zero turnovers for a stellar 133.1 passer rating. On the other hand, in week 8, Smith put up an unfathomable passer rating just north of 157 against the Cardinals. Smith currently sits at third in the NFL in passer rating and has led the niners to a division leading six wins and two losses (with one obnoxious tie marring their record). This should be a no brainer for Harbaugh. Kaepernick put up some gaudy numbers last week and he showed his immense talent during preseason but the truth is that Smith took them on a deep playoff run last year via an offensive clinic in New Orleans. This is not really a bad problem for Harbaugh to have; he is deciding between an exciting new quarterback and the consistent leader of this offense over the past few seasons. This time, the call is clearly to stick with Smith, but look for this question to come up over and over again until one has clearly won the team.
