The dream is dead. Shockingly, 82-0 will not be the New York Knickerbockers’ record this year. Last night, the Knicks suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies. What went wrong? First of all, the Grizz are a pretty good team and not a great matchup for the Knicks, but I think one stat demonstrates my main concern about the Knicks.
That stat is 26% on three point shooting. Prior to this game, the Knicks had been shooting 43% on three pointers. My concern is that the hot shooting first 6 games is just a statistical blip, and that their 3P% will regress back to the mean over the course of the season. Considering how many three pointers the Knicks take, this regression could seriously affect their offensive efficiency. Hopefully, the Knicks can avoid this fate, but Friday night may not have just marked the end of a winning streak, but, also, the beginning of a new trend.
