| Which teams will play for the National Championship in January? |
With that said, Alabama's loss means that there will be some shuffling at the top of the BCS standings given that 4 of the top 5 teams won in pretty dominant fashion. The BCS is highly unpredictable but these are the rankings I believe are correct:
1) Kansas State University: The Wildcats have built upon the great success they had last year and have National Championship aspirations for this thus far perfect season. With only two games left, at Baylor and then at home against the 17th ranked Longhorns, it seems likely that the Wildcats and Collin Klein will finish the season undefeated and be playing in Miami for the coaches trophy.
2) Notre Dame: Many people say Oregon should be the number two team in the country but if you look at their schedule you quickly realize that their gaudy numbers are skewed by the lack of good opponents they have faced aside from USC. The other ranked teams they've played all are in the 20's. Notre Dame also has an edge here because of how much the computers love them. Because of their quality wins against Oklahoma, Michigan, and Michigan State, the Fighting Irish will be able to get the elusive number 2 spot in the country.
3) Oregon: The Ducks are a very very good team, but until they play Oregon State and Stanford we will not be able to gauge just how good they are. With a potential matchup against UCLA or USC awaiting them in the Pac 12 championship game, Oregon would then have three straight match ups against top 25 teams, which would bolster their resume. For now, however, they remain at 3.
4) Alabama: The Crimson Tide are no longer the team to beat but they are the best of the one loss teams by far. The way Alabama was able to dominant opponents for the first 8 weeks of the season indicates just how good they are. After an emotional game against LSU it is understandable that they could slip up. Alabama already has a date in the SEC Championship game against Georgia, which could propel the winner into the National Championship Conversation. The Tide will drop to number 4 in this weeks rankings but surely will climb back into the top 2 if they can be dominant in the coming weeks.
5) Georgia: After getting trounced at South Carolina, many people gave up on the Dawgs and were calling for Mark Richt to be fired. Well Georgia fans can rejoice in the fact that the perpetually on the hot seat coach is still around in Athens. He has the Dawgs in the BCS conversation and saved their season. The game against Alabama in the Georgia Dome will determine whether it will be another Outback Bowl or if it'll be any of the BCS mega bowls. After decimating Auburn yesterday and looking ahead to Georgia South and Georgia Tech, the Dawgs will enter the SEC championship in a similar position as the Tide and will try to be the one to carry on the great SEC tradition of winning the National Championship.
