The New York Jets. A Disgrace.
Info Post
The 2012 New York Jets will go down as the most disgraceful team in NFL history. Not even the 0-16 Lions from 2008 can hold a candle to this abomination of a team. The Jets 6-10 record is an incredible feat given their futility and mismanagement. Starting back in the summer when the Jets acquired Tim Tebow it was evident that this season was going to be a complete joke. For them the hiring of Tony Sparano and the acquisition of Tim Tebow were the so called "upgrades" they needed to return to the playoffs. After getting Tebow the Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum did the unthinkable and gave Mark Sanchez a ludicrous contract extension for 6 years. Then ESPN decided to turn SportsCenter into a daily talkshow about the Jets and showed us every moment of their practices and preseason. Rather then take this press and use it to their advantage, the Jets made themselves into a bigger joke with actions such as brawls after plays and Tim Tebow running shirtless in the rain. Then the Jets laid an egg in the preseason finishing 0-4 and not scoring a SINGLE touchdown the entire time. But what is preseason right?
Week 1 rolled around and the Jets looked alright against the inferior Bills and Sanchez looked like he knew what he was doing out there. This added fuel to the fire and the media jumped right on the Jets bandwagon and there was an even greater media frenzy surrounding them. Once again, Rex Ryan proved he cannot deal with the media and kept digging his team a hole.
The season continued and continued and the Jets kept getting progressively worse. In Week 4 the Jets lost to the San Francisco 49ers 34-0 at home in a game in which they lost Santonio Holmes for the season. As if the result of the game was not enough to be embarrassed about, Mark Sanchez finished that game with a QBR of 2.8. Sanchez's play really hit rock bottom against the Patriots on Thanksgiving night in primetime though. Who can forget the worst play of the year when Sanchez ran smack into the back of his offensive lineman and fell to the ground like Pacquiao and then fumbled the ball leading to a touchdown for the Pats. Sanchez had 5 games in which his QBR was less than or equal to 10. FIVE GAMES in which he was a complete joke. Against Arizona in week 13 Rex Ryan finally came to his senses and benched Sanchez in favor of Greg McElroy who would lead the Jets to an exciting 7-6 win. Tebow was inactive that game because of the injury he sustained previously. It was clear to everyone that Tebow's workload was really taking a toll on him... (66 plays to that point really is a lot...). The season hit its low point in yet another Monday Night Football embarrassment against the Titans, which eliminated the Jets from playoff contention. After the game Ryan announced that Sanchez would not be starting the following week.
Everyone thought that this meant Tebowmania was going to take over gang green. Nope. Ryan opted to play McElroy instead, much to the disappointment of Tebow. So what happened in week 16 against the Chargers? The Jets lost and McElroy was sacked 11 times. ELEVEN times. As if the Jets couldn't do anything else wrong, they decided it a good idea to nearly get their QB killed.
Thankfully, the season ended today for the Jets in a blowout loss to the Bills. Now the news is that Tony Sparano will be fired very soon. But owner Woody Johnson should not stop there, he needs to clean house. Start over. Do everything he can do to distance the Jets from the Rex and Mark era. Clearly this is not a combination that is working and it will never work. Mark Sanchez is not an NFL QB and Rex Ryan is far too one sided of a coach to succeed in this league again.
It was not just this season that has caused the Jets to be the laughing stock of the NFL. This has been going on for a while now actually. Ever since penisgate hit New York (Brett Favre sending naked pix to Sterger) the Jets have been a joke. They just want to be in the media limelight, football is secondary to this team. The Jets have no place in the public eye until they can rebuild themselves into a respectable NFL team.
