Info Post
Last year we saw the greatest passing season in recent memory, highlighted by Drew Brees shattering Marino's single season passing yards record. This year we have a new cadre of young talent ready to make their own mark on the record books. Every season there is a handful of players in position to set single-season records and rarely do they ever come through, but let's explore this year's candidates.

Aldon Smith: The 2nd year linebacker out of Missouri is on an absolute tear. Coming off the same side as all-pro end Justin Smith, Aldon has a free release to the quarterback more often than most players can dream of. With his unstoppable power rush and seven foot wingspan, it is hard to hold Smith back for long. Going into week 15 he has 19.5 sacks on the season, 3.5 shy of Strahan's single-season record set in 2002. Aldon will need to record just over 1 sack per game against the Pats, Seahawks and Cardinals. This is probably the record most likely to be broken this year.

Adrian Peterson: All Day is back. The best back in the league has recovered from a torn ACL and MCL and is better than ever. With an even 1,600 yards on the season, AD is 505 yards shy of Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105 set in 1984. Peterson has his work cut out for him if he wants to set this record, needing to average just over 160 yards per game against the Rams, Texans and Packers. Luckily, with his Vikings playing this badly, Peterson is guaranteed a high number of touches in each of those games.

Calvin Johnson: Megatron may not be finding the end zone as much as fantasy owners expected, but he is putting up yards at an unprecedented rate. With 1,546 receiving yards, Calvin needs 302 to tie Jerry Rice's single-season record of 1,848 set in 1995. He will need to average a hair over 100 yards per contest against the Cardinals, Falcons and Bears. After the Cardinals' 58-0 loss to the Seahawks yesterday, don't be surprised if Megatron puts a real dent in that 302 yards in Phoenix.

For any of these records to be broken this year would be amazing, but all three is simply unheard of. With such a talented class of elite players not even in their prime yet, we may see mass rewriting of the record books very soon.
