LeBron did it again. Millions of fans who have finally forgiven him got a proverbial lump of coal from the King. No, he did not have another "Decision" or leave Miami for the Thunder. He announced his career-long withdrawal from the Dunk Contest, the quickly fading event of the NBA's All-Star Weekend.
Since LeBron was a high flying junior at St. Vincent St. Mary high school in Ohio, the nation has wanted to see him against the league's best in this contest of athleticism and creativity. Drafted at 18 years old, LeBron solidified his name among the game's best dunkers on his very first night in an NBA jersey. Check out his first career dunk.
Since then, the King has put together a nine year highlight reel full of windmills, alley oops, reverses and any other dunks humanly possible (and a few not humanly possible). Any basketball fan can lose himself in LeBron highlights for hours on end and most probably have. So how is it possible that this physical freak, a reincarnation of Jordan, Dominique and Malone, has never participated in the dunk contest?
In 2009 it seemed that the call for LeBron to take his talents to the contest would finally be answered. During the 2009 All-Star weekend, probably the last dunk contest that had significant viewership, LeBron announced in the heat of the moment that he would participate in the following year's contest. Alas, 2010 came and went and we never saw James dunk from the free-throw line or over Chris Bosh.
Then we had a brief stint of hope after the Heat won the 2012 NBA finals. With a championship out of the way, LeBron can relax and have fun. Seemed like the perfect time for him to indulge the fans and finally take on the league's highest fliers. Unfortunately, it seems that, at least for now, winning the Finals has left LeBron even more motivated and dedicated to his pursuit of more rings. He is taking his fitness more seriously than ever, biking to every Heat home game and limiting frivolous stylish dunks. Now he has made it official, announcing his intentions to never compete in the NBA's favorite showboating contest.
Looks like the dream is finally over, but something tells me we may yet see LeBron change his mind again. Until then, we have to settle for the posterizing dunks he throws down every game.
