For the last three seasons an unexpected player has burst onto the national scene and won the Heisman trophy. First it was Cam Newton then it was RGIII and this past season it was Johnny Football. While there have been the usual favorites each of the these years, they have failed to live up to the hype and have had to watch as their counterparts took home the hardware. However, I expect one of the favorites to take care of business next year and win the Heisman trophy. Here are the players to watch:
The Favorites:
Jadeveon Clowney- Is there any surprise that Clowney is the favorite entering the season? He is the best player in college football on either side of the ball and is the best defensive player in college football in years. Don't believe me? Watch this one play and you'll be sold. If that wasn't enough, the state of South Carolina now has a sign that says beware of Clowney on their state line. The NFL is going to have teams losing on purpose towards the end of the year just so they can be in a position to draft 1st overall and take this one in a generation talent.
Johnny Manziel- Could Johnny Football become to first player since Archie Griffin to win the Heisman twice? You bet he can...but it won't be easy. Manziel is going to lose the best offensive linemen in the country to the NFL in Luke Joeckel but A&M has an amazing recruiting class coming into College Station and there are going to be a ton of weapons around Manziel who will keep him great. Johnny Football looked amazing in the Cotton Bowl versus Oklahoma and he certainly hopes to build upon that momentum in the spring and ultimately in the fall. A&M has a bright future.
Players to Watch:
Braxton Miller- The rising junior in Columbus will look to find any way to get better after what was a great year for the Buckeyes in 2012. Braxton Miller is a great dual threat quarterback who will put up really good numbers both passing and rushing. Miller got some votes for the Heisman in 2012 and will definitely get more in 2013 if he plays at the same or higher level.
AJ McCarron- What more can McCarron do? He has won back to back national championships, was the nations most efficient passer this past season, and has arguably the most beautiful girlfriend in college football. AJ will be entering his third season as the starter for the Tide and will enter the season with a huge target on his back, but by now he has to be used to that. AJ will have Kenny Bell and Amari Cooper returning next season along with two headed running back monsters Eddy Lacy and TJ Yeldon. Of all the players to watch on this list, AJ McCarron is in the best position the move up into the favorites.
Aaron Murray- Georgia's prolific quarterback is returning to Athens for his senior year and Mark Richt and all of Dawg nation couldn't be happier. Aaron Murray's top offensive targets are all coming back next season as UGA is not losing a single offensive starter and WR Malcom Mithchell will solely be focusing on offense next year. Murray and the Dawgs have a very tough schedule and that will likely be a huge factor as to whether he is able to get to New York City in December.
Teddy Bridgewater- Louisville's savior was able to lead the Cardinals to their biggest win in program history last week when they beat number 3 ranked Florida. Teddy Bridgewater is a less famous Johnny Manziel but this kid can flat out ball. He is insanely accurate, and is one of the most mobile QB's in the country. The one thing that could hurt Teddy is that Louisville may not be at the level of the other ACC schools next year in their first season in the conference, but he will benefit greatly from the power conference.
Dark Horses:
D'Anthony Thomas- Thomas is probably one of the happiest people in football about Chip Kelly's decision to return to Oregon. Now that Kenjon Barner is gone, Thomas will see most of Oregon's carries and will be able to turn even more heads with his unworldly speed. Check out this play.
Marquise Lee- Marquise Lee has all the talent in the world to win the Heisman trophy, however he does not have a potent QB, at least not at this time. Matt Barkley is headed to the NFL and either Max Wittick of Max Browne will be the starter in SoCal next year. The QB position could really hurt Lee's stock but if he builds a strong connection with whoever starts, he will be the best receiver in the country.
